1. Video - "Practicing Safe Science " (29 minutes)

Lenny reminded the committee:

• Make sure hoods are inspected every year: they should have inspection stickers on them.
• Limit the hazardous items in your lab to only what you need.
• Make sure you understand all the hazards before you start working with hazardous items.

2. 2004/2005 Lab Inspection Schedules - Team Chairs

Team chairs reported the following lab inspection schedules:

1. Team # 1 (McKay bsmt-2nd flr) -- Adam Malinowski will not be able to be Chair. John Chervisky has accepted the position and will set a date. unscheduled
2. Team # 2 (McKay 3-5) -- Daniel Blair - January 18, 2005
3. Team # 3 (Cruft/Pierce) -- Rob Jenks - December 20 , 2004
4. Team # 4 (Lyman) -- Kyle Alvine - unscheduled
5. Team # 5 (Jefferson) -- Jeff Miller can't be Chair; Alex Donohue has agreed to be Chair and will set a date. unscheduled
6. Team # 6 (ESL/HEPL) -- Dick Co - February 2005
7. Team # 7 (Link) -- Lu Kang - unscheduled
8. Team # 8 (Maxwell/Dworkin) -- Xuan Liang - January 11, 2005
9. Team # 9 (ART Shop) -- Lenny Solomon - unscheduled

REMINDER: It is a good idea to inform labs of their impending inspection, so that we do not disturb their experiments.

3. EH&S Report

• EH&S is working with Ed Jackson at 40 Oxford Street to make sure the fume hood system is not contaminated. Contractors were concerned about shutting down the system. It is a "gang system" for exhausting fume hoods.
• Machine shop safety - EH&S will be looking at all machine shops at Harvard to see what can be improved for safety (over 30 shops).
• Flammable solvents should not be stored in refrigerators! A lab in New York was destroyed by this.
• There is a back safety training on January 16, 2005.

4. Laser Safety Training Online - Rob Stanhope

Rob and Lenny reported that the online laser safety training module is available to be tested by members of the Safety Committee. Rob emailed to everyone a link to the module. He reminded the Committee that the module is still in the "alpha" phase of development.

5. Hazardous Waste Training Report - Rob Stanhope

Rob reported on several people needing retraining.

6. Old Business

• Basement in Pierce Hall - the green slime pool (a non-toxic dye) will be removed. We are re-analyzing it to make sure it is safe.
