3. Response to Alarms Query - Lenny
Two people still need to get back to Lenny regarding the alarms (if any)
in their lab area: Steve Cronin and Frank Molea. John Chervinsky had a radiation
alarm; another lab reported a hydrogen alarm; everyone else had no safety
alarms.
A poster regarding alarms will be placed on this web site that people should
print out and post outside their labs (or on lab doors).
4. Training Database
Only three people have not created a user account on the training database:
Louie Defeo, Roberto Martinez, and Steve Cronin.
5. SOPs - Standard Operating Procedures
Everyone needs to update their SOPs. Please send the updates to Rob asap.
6. Laser Registration Forms
Once all the forms have been turned in, we will copy them and send them to
EH&S.
7. EH&S Report
- Polio Survey - there were no polio samples.
- There was a small spill (a bottle of varnish) yesterday in McKay 220. Everything
went fine--response was quick.
- There was a small spill of mercury in McKay which was easily cleaned up
by EH&S.
- Old mercury thermometers can be exchanged for new ones at the VWR Stockroom
in the basement of the Chemistry Dept.
- Lenny asked the people who monitor spill kits to check them for mercury
spill kits. If the kits are missing, we can restock them.
- A good way to find spilled mercury is to turn off the lights and shine a
flashlight at angle at the area of the spill. The mercury will reflect the
light.
- There is a vacuum for mercury spills located in G7 Pierce Hall.
- Someone asked how to dispose of UV lamps. They should be placed in an SAA.
8. Hazardous Waste Training Report - Rob Stanhope
Rob reported on several people needing retraining.
9. Old Business - none
10. New Business
- Fume hoods have been inspected.
- Two hoods in Jefferson need to be recertified. Two hoods in ESL 223 also
need recertification.
- McKay 211 - the hood alarm is not working. Ed Jackson said he would look
at it.
