Meeting Minutes

1. Video - "Laser Safety" (17 minutes)
Lenny emphasized that everyone should inspect their laser safety goggles
to make sure they are not scratched!
2. 2000/2001 Lab Inspection Schedules - Team Chairs
Team chairs reported the following lab inspection schedules:
- Team # 1 (McKay 1-3) - January 23 at 1:30pm
- Team # 2 (McKay 4-5) - January 12 at 1:00pm
- Team # 3 (Cruft/Pierce) - January 11 (time not designated)
- Team # 4 (Lyman) - January 18 at 10:00am
- Team # 5 (Jefferson) - not present at meeting, TBA
- Team # 6 (ESL/HEPL) - January 17 at 10:00am
- Team # 7 (Link) - February 8 (time not designated)
3. Summer Lab Inspection Follow-up
- Jefferson lab areas:
- updated emergency access sheets
- updated sign on refrigerator
- laser signs posted - light will be installed
- no need to black out window--laser not used
- safety shower replaced
- Golovchenko lab areas
- updated emergency access sheets
- laser in lab not in use, no need for signage
- safety shower replaced
- Doyle lab areas
- updated emergency access sheets
- laser signs are posted
- safety shower replaced
- chemical storage cleaned up
- Silvera lab areas
- updated emergency access sheets
- safety shower replaced
- will get spill kit
- lights will be connected
- should seek "confined space entry training"
from Gary Casabian at EH&S
- Horowitz lab areas
- updated emergency access sheets
- solvents should be moved away from the sink
- need fire extinguisher
- Howe lab areas
- chemicals near edge of shelf need to be moved -- not
yet done
- need respirator training -- must call Dr. Kenneth Gold in Health Services
for a medical surveillance appointment, then Gary Casabian can administer
respirator training.
- must check before January meeting to see if respirators
are needed!!
- Aziz lab areas
- cleaned up room 502
- laser interlock works fine
- warning light in room 310 for laser (Class 3B) needed -- EH&S will
install
- violation in room 512 has been eliminated
- Mazur lab areas - no safety rep was present to give
a follow-up report.
- Pershan lab areas
- fume hood has been certified
- need compressed gas training
- Spaepen lab areas
- new laser sign in room 424
- will get rid of respirator in 424
- laser light not needed
- pump oil moved to SAA
- need to call Ed Jackson about asbestos in room 406
- Tinkham lab areas
- cleaned up room 218
- nitric acid and acetic acid need to be stored apart
in room 225
- HF antidote is out of date in room 225 - need to replace
it
- Westervelt lab areas
- egress paths in rooms 202, 203, 204, 214 need to be
cleared
- sharps containers are in appropriate -- need to purchase
correct containers
- HF antidote out of date in room 211 -- need to replace
- Narayanamurti lab areas - Chavva Reddy was not present.
Report needs to be given.
- Paul Group 5th floor
- 501, 503 - nothing done yet - Dawen Pang needs to
get a hard copy of the inspection reports.
4. Hazardous Waste Training Report
Rob Stanhope (Safety Coordinator) reported that the online training program
is now working. He handed out a long list of people who have not yet completed
their retraining requirement.
5. EH&S Report
Henry Littleboy:
- Ether labels for hazardous waste are available in the Naito Building mailroom
- Update on the Airgas Cylinder Committee - Airgas has not done what it
agreed to do. It has failed in all efforts and is NOT considered a preferred
vendor!
6. New Business
Stuart McNeil (Physics) reminded everyone to fill-out their hazardous waste
labels carefully and correctly.
The meeting went overtime and Lenny postponed old business until the January
meeting.
