Meeting Minutes - November 14, 2001
DEAS/Physics Safety Committee
Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, November 14, 2001
Noon-1:00PM
1. Video - "Hazard Alert: Laboratory Spills" (11 mins.)
2. Safety Committee Subcommittee Assignments
Lenny distributed the subcommittee
assignments. Among the many assignments are the lab inspection teams.
Each team must determine when it will inspect its assigned lab areas in January
or February. The actual inspections are usually completed in one day. Team
chairpersons should report their inspection schedules to the Safety Committee
at the December meeting (December 12, 2001).
3. On-line Laser Training
Lenny and Rob met with Prof. Mazur and his web programmer Suvendra Dutta.
Mr. Dutta will create the web pages and database for the online training module.
DEAS will host the streaming video. We hope to have it up and running soon.
Lenny also mentioned the online training will be username/password protected.
4. PhD Hit Squad
Lenny has expanded the hit squad to include Post-docs and Research Assistants.
In DEAS, Martha Mooney will notify Ralph Generazzo when post-docs or research
assistants leave their jobs at Harvard. Bonnie Currier will monitor the same
in Physics.
5. Evacuation Plans
Lenny reminded everyone to hand in their completed evacuation plans.
6. EH&S Report
- Howard reported that EH&S is finalizing a flip-chart of emergency procedures
for the Cambridge campus. All labs will get copies in the next few months.
- Gary Casabian will be the new director of the Operation Center.
- Henry reported that he will be retiring in January 2002.
7. Hazardous Waste Training Report
- Rob Stanhope read a list of names of people who need to update their online
training.
- "Who's a fool" - Lenny suggested that we announce each month which
groups have a high number of violations in their SAAs. Rob read the names
of two groups and Lenny suggested that they be more diligent in their inspections
of the SAAs.
8. Old Business
- Lenny asked if everyone had updated the emergency info on their lab doors.
The forms are on our web site. Someone asked if the location of circuit breakers
should be listed. After some discussion, the committee felt it was not necessary
to list circuit breakers.
- Blood-borne pathogen training has been rescheduled for 2:00pm today, November
14, 2001.
- It was suggested that we remind faculty of the emergency evacuation procedures.
- Lenny asked everyone to create a user account for the training database
that is on our website. Safety reps should log on and double-check the info
to make sure we have an up-to-date list of their group members and training
needs.
9. New Business
The Control Center has a database for emergency access. People who need to
be notified in case of emergency situations should have their name and phone
number added to it.
