DEAS/Physics Safety Committee

Noon-1:00PM
A. McKay 4-5:
B. A.R.T.
- Steve Setterlun was not present at today's meeting.
A. Howard Herman-Haase:
- EH&S is moving again to 175 No. Harvard Street.
- The EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDE flip chart has been printed and distributed. He handed them out to the committee members.
- Howard passed around a hand-out detailing information about OSHA's policy on food in laboratories. In response to questions raised at last month's meeting, Howard found that OSHA's policy would recommend that food should not be present or consumed at the same workbench where soldering is done. Also, on another topic, OSHA does not require that there be one "kill-switch" for an entire machine shop.
B. Bill Irwin: Cate Thomas introduced Bill Irwin, who is the Assoc. Radiation Expert.
- Mr. Irwin spoke at length about laser safety concerns and provided everyone with hand-outs on laser safety responsibilities.
- EH&S has been instructed by the Radiation Safety Committee to develop a laser training program. EH&S will be required to regularly inspect lasers at Harvard.
- Someone asked how dangerous "laser pointers" are. A laser pointer is a Class 3a laser and is not very dangerous. At most it might cause temporary blindness or a glare spot in the visual field. They are not regulated.
- Bill Irwin can be contacted at william_irwin@harvard.edu
