Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, January 10, 2001

1. Video - "Keeping Compressed Gases Under Control" by Matheson
(18 minutes)
Peter Pershan commented that all new students working around gas cylinders
should see this video. Lenny Solomon reminded the Committee that we offer
compressed gas training in the Spring Seminar Series and this video can be
borrowed from the Safety Committee library of books and videos.
2. 2000/2001 Lab Inspection Schedules - Team Chairs
Team # 5 has not submitted a schedule to inspect the Jefferson Labs. Hasan
Guzel will be replacing Chavva Reddy as the Chair for this inspection team
and will be scheduling the inspection.
Chavva Reddy is finishing up at Harvard and is now seeking employment. Wei
Yi will now be the representative for the Narayanamurti lab.
3. 2000/2001 Lab Inspection Report Schedule
The inspection teams are requested to present their inspection reports to
the Safety Committee during the monthly meeting as indicated below.
Reports due at:
- February meeting - 2/14:
- Team 1 (McKay 1-3, Yuki)
- Team 2 (McKay 4-5, Derek)
- Team 4 (Lyman, Steve)
- March meeting - 3/14:
- Team 3 (Cruft/Pierce, Ce)
- Team 6 (ESL/HEPL, Andrea)
- Team 7 (Link, Bivash)
- April meeting - 4/11:
- Team 5 (Jefferson, Hasan)
- Team 8 (Maxwell/Dworkin, Chip)
4. Summer Lab Inspection Follow-up Reports
- Venky Lab - Chavva Reddy was not present to give a report. Lenny gave a
printed copy of the inspection report to Wei Yi.
- Mazur Lab - Nan Shen reported that everything had been fixed or taken care
of. The fire extinguisher was inspected; bottles were moved; respirator is
not needed. There is no respirator in the lab.
- Paul Group - Dawen Pang reported after the meeting that everything has been
taken care of in her area.
- Gabrielese Group - the access sheets have been updated; a spill kit has
been installed; fire extinguisher was inspected; safety shower was taken care
of.
5. EH&S Report - Mike Labosky
- OSHA Ergonomics Rule - Employers must have a program to address ergonomics
issues in the workplace by October 2001. EH&S will be reporting on how
this will affect Harvard University.
- OSHA inspected the Harvard dental services work space. Harvard received
a $3,000 fine and citations on four problems. This is a reminder to pay attention
to safety procedures in your labs.
- D.O.T. shipping - There will be training for DOT shipping regulations on
January 17th at 1:30-3:30pm in the Operations Center at 1 Oxford Street (in
the Science Center).
6. Hazardous Waste Training Report - Rob Stanhope
Rob reported that many people have not conpleted their online retraining
despite repeated reminders via email. He announced several names of people
who are due for January retraining. Rob and Lenny asked the Safety Reps to
check the training database on our web site and verify that everyone in their
group is listed.
7. Old Business
- On-line Laser Safety Training: Status Report - Rob Stanhope reported that
he has completed the video capturing for both the 1999 and 2000 filmings.
He is now working on the storyboard for the video project.
- New Experiments - none mentioned.
- Steve Shepard asked which rooms the inspection teams would need to inspect.
Lenny said he would email the teams the reports from past years to use as
a room guide.
- Stuart McNeil commented that the floor plans that are posted on our web
site should not be available to the public. Lenny said he would discuss this
with him after the meeting.
- Phosphine - there will be a small meeting to finalize work on the phosphine
issue in the Thaddeus Lab on January 18th at 10:00am.
