ROOM: Pierce G17 (DEAS Undergraduate Machine Shop)

DATE: August 21, 2006
TYPE OF RESEARCH: General machine tool usage. Qualified students use
this shop to fabricate parts to support their research.
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT MUST BE USED FOR ALL WORK:
- Safety Glasses - Must be employed when working with any process that
could throw off debris that would break non-safety glass (using machine tools
is a clear example).
- Face Shields - Must be worn when using chemicals.
- Rubber Boots - N/A
- Safety Goggles - See Safety Glasses above.
- Aprons - N/A
- Gloves - Work gloves should be used when lifting sharp materials.
When working with chemicals or other materials that warrant the use of protective
gloves, proper glove selection is critical. For specific glove type vs. chemical,

under "Safety Committee Services." If there is any question, see
Lenny Solomon.
- Steel-toed Shoes - Should be worn when moving heavy objects.
- Respirators - N/A
- Laser Safety Goggles - N/A
- Other - Dust masks must be worn while machining certain materials
that create airborne dust and particles.
GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING RULES:
- Material and tooling must be returned to appropriate cabinets and closets.
- Machines and floors must be kept clear of any accumulation of metal chips.
WASTE DISPOSAL RULES:
Any oil, or chemical waste must be placed in a marked and approved waste
disposal container then placed in the satellite accumulation area so it can
be disposed of by EH&S personnel.
FUME HOOD USE: N/A
CHEMICAL STORAGE: N/A
SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIRED:
Students must take the Machine
Shop Training course given by the Physics Department.
CHEMICAL SPILL CLEANUP PROCEDURES:
- Small spills (oil & solvent) must be cleaned up by shop personnel.
- For large spills, clear the area of personnel and call the University Operations Center (5-5560).
OTHER RELEVANT COMMENTS:
- Long hair must always be tied back and out of the way.
- Loose fitting clothing and jewelry is not allowed when using the machines.
- Tools should not be left near moving parts of the machines.
