Standard Operating Procedure
LOCAL SAFETY OFFICER: Carl Gottlieb
ROOM: Pierce B4
P.I.: Patrick Thaddeus
DATE: August 21, 2006
TYPE OF RESEARCH: Laboratory Astrophysics
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT MUST BE USED FOR ALL WORK:
- Safety Glasses - Must be worn while handling any chemicals and/or
while working with compressed gases.
- Face Shields - N/A
- Rubber Boots - N/A
- Safety Goggles - Should be worn while transferring hazardous chemicals
or waste.
- Aprons - N/A
- Gloves - Cryogenic gloves must be worn while transferring
liquid nitrogen and while working with apparatus directly in contact with
liquid nitrogen. Latex or nitrile gloves should be worn while handling
or transferring hazardous chemicals and waste. When working with chemicals
or other materials that warrant the use of protective gloves (such as work
with cryogens), proper glove selection is critical. At the Safety Committee
web site (http://www-safety.deas.harvard.edu)
under "Safety Committee Services" can be found a listing of glove
type vs. chemical. If there is any question, see Lenny Solomon.

- Respirators - N/A
- Laser Safety Goggles - N/A

GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING RULES:
- Store chemicals in the appropriate storage area: flammables in the yellow
flammable materials cabinet, corrosives in the area designated for oxidizers
in the cabinet under the hood, and oxidizers in the area designated for oxidizers
in the cabinet under the hood.
- Label all sample containers with their composition and pressure (when appropriate).
Always date and initial sample containers.
- Keep fume hoods free of waste and clutter.
WASTE DISPOSAL RULES:
- All waste should be disposed of in the satellite area located in the main
laboratory.
- Label each component of the hazardous waste in plain English.
- Also indicate the approximate concentration of each component in the hazardous
waste.
- Do not mix incompatible materials in the same container.
- All hazardous waste containers must be stored in a secondary containment
tray.
FUME HOOD USE:
- Do not obstruct fume hoods or use them for passive storage.
- All fumes hoods must be certified once per year.
CHEMICAL STORAGE:
- Store chemicals in the appropriate storage area. Flammables in the yellow
flammable materials cabinet, corrosives in the area designated for corrosive
material in the cabinet under the hood and oxidizers in the area designated
for oxidizers in the cabinet under the hood.
- Do not store incompatible materials in the same secondary containment tray.
SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIRED:
- All personnel must have hazardous waste safety training.
- All personnel must have laser safety training.
- All personnel must have compressed gas safety training.
CHEMICAL SPILL CLEANUP PROCEDURES:
- Small spills should be cleaned up by laboratory personnel using the spill
kit located in the satellite accumulation area.
- For large spills, clear the area of personnel and call the University Operations Center (5-5560).
