Standard Operating Procedure

TYPE OF RESEARCH: Microfabrication
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT MUST BE USED FOR ALL WORK:
- Safety Glasses -
- Face Shields - Use when etching with hydrofluoric acid.
- Rubber Boots -
- Safety Goggles - When using any chemical (i.e. acid, base, solvent).
- Aprons - Use when etching with hydrofluoric acid.
- Gloves - (Please specify type) Use vinyl gloves with vacuum
equipment; vinyl & rubber gloves with chemicals. When working with chemicals
or other materials that warrant the use of protective gloves (such as work
with cryogens), proper glove selection is critical. At the Safety Committee
web site (http://www-safety.deas.harvard.edu)
under "Safety Committee Services" can be found a listing of glove
type vs. chemical. If there is any question, see Lenny Solomon.

- Laser Safety Goggles -
- Other - Cleanroom garments: outer cleanroom, use open faced hoods,
frocks, boots; inner cleanroom, use closed faced hoods, frocks, boots, vinyl
gloves.
GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING RULES:
- No dust emitting materials (i.e. cardboard, paper).
- Wipe off all supplies and equipment before entering cleanroom.
- Clean up after lab use (i.e. return beakers, chemicals to shelves); leave
the cleanroom as it was when you entered it.
WASTE DISPOSAL RULES:
- Put chemical wastes into appropriately labeled waste containers.
- When using new/empty container, list all chemicals (names, not formulas!)
on hazardous material label.
- Give full waste containers to Steve Shepard.
- Deposit used pipets into waste pipets container.
FUME HOOD USE:
- Outer Cleanroom: acids, bases, solvents; use labeled beakers with correct
chemical.
- Inner Cleanroom: bases, solvents; use labeled beakers with correct chemical.
CHEMICAL STORAGE:
- Outer Cleanroom: under hood, in the appropriately labeled cabinet.
- Inner Cleanroom: lower shelves, appropriate labeled section. No acids!

- Chemical Use, Hazardous Waste Disposal by Henry Littleboy
CHEMICAL SPILL CLEAN-UP PROCEDURES:
- Small spills should be cleaned up by those responsible and contact Steve
Shepard.
- Spill Kits: outer room, located to right of fume hood; inner cleanroom,
located under hood. Also, there is a kit in the main accumulation area outside
room 219.
OTHER RELEVANT COMMENTS:
- Deposit used/broken glass, razor blades, etc. into "Sharps Container."
- When in doubt about any procedure, process, etc., call Steve Shepard at
5-3297 or 781-828-9593 (home).
