Standard Operating Procedure
LOCAL SAFETY OFFICER: Stan Cotreau
ROOM: Lyman 032 (Physics Machine Shop)
P.I.: Dr. David Norcross (Physics Dept.)
DATE: December 9, 2002
TYPE OF RESEARCH: General machine tool usage, students who are qualified
utilize this shop to fabricate machined parts and sheet metal parts which are
used to support their research.
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT MUST BE USED FOR ALL WORK:
- Safety Glasses - must be worn at all times.
- Face Shields -
- Rubber Boots -
- Safety Goggles - Brazing and welding must be done only in the designated
areas, proper eye protection must be worn by students who utilize this equipment
- Aprons -
- Gloves - Gloves are NOT to be worn during machining operations. When
working with chemicals or other materials that warrant the use of protective
gloves (such as work with cryogens), proper glove selection is critical. At
the Safety Committee web site (http://www-safety.deas.harvard.edu)
under "Safety Committee Services" can be found a listing of glove
type vs. chemical. If there is any question, see Lenny Solomon.
- Steel-toed Shoes - REQUIRED BY LAW!.

GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING RULES:
- Any oil spilled on floor must be picked up immediately, speedi dri
must be disposed of in the proper manner.
- All machinery must be completely cleaned of chips following all machining
operations and the floor around the machine must be swept, and the chips placed
into the appropriate bins.
- All cutting tools and measuring tools must be placed into their proper storage
place.
- At no time will any stock be left on the floor!! It must always be placed
in the proper storage rack.
WASTE DISPOSAL RULES:
Any oil, or chemical waste must be placed in a marked and approved waste
disposal container then placed in the satellite accumulation area so it can
be disposed of by EH&S personnel.
FUME HOOD USE: There is no fume hood in this location
CHEMICAL STORAGE:
All chemicals are to be stored in the flammable liquids cabinets located
in the rear of the shop.
SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIRED:
All students wishing to work in the Machine Shop must either take the machine
shop class provided by the Physics Dept., and pass all areas of the course,
or prove competency in the shop to the Machine Shop Manager.
CHEMICAL SPILL CLEAN-UP PROCEDURES:
- Oil spills should be cleaned up with speedi-dri, which is located
in the shop, then put the speedi-dri into a container for disposal
by EH&S personnel.
- Chemical spills should only be cleaned up by properly trained personnel.
- In the event of a spill call EH&S if danger is not imminent and follow their
instructions.
- If a dangerous situation has occured pull the alarm box located outside
the main door of the shop, and await emergency personnels arrival in the rear
of Lyman Lab.
OTHER RELEVANT COMMENTS:
In a machine shop environment there are a few safety rules that should be
mentioned:
- Long hair must always be tied back and out of the way.
- Loose fitting clothing poses a safety hazard, please make sure all loose
fitting clothing is secure prior to using the machines.
- Tools may not be left laying around near moving parts of the machines.
- Do not guess as to how things are done, if you don’t know how to do something
you must ask.
