TYPE OF RESEARCH: Experimental physics (prep lab)

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT MUST BE USED FOR ALL WORK:

• Gloves - Use rubber gloves when handling solvents, corrosives, and other chemicals. When working with chemicals or other materials that warrant the use of protective gloves (such as work with cryogens), proper glove selection is critical. At the Safety Committee web site (http://www-safety.deas.harvard.edu) under "Safety Committee Services" can be found a listing of glove type vs. chemical. If there is any question, see Lenny Solomon.

GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING RULES:

Clean glassware, sink, counter, and fume hood after use.

WASTE DISPOSAL RULES:

1. Store hazardous waste in labelled containers in accumulation area.
2. Call 6-3322 for pickup when a container is full.

FUME HOOD USE:

Use fume hood for all procedures where hazardous chemicals are involved, i.e. when washing parts in harsh solvents or corrosives.

CHEMICAL STORAGE:

1. Return all chemicals to proper storage area when not in use.
2. Acids, bases, and solvents are all stored in separate secondary confinement trays.

SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIRED:

Everyone must take the hazardous waste training course. Also take the chemical spill course.

CHEMICAL SPILL CLEAN-UP PROCEDURES:

1. Notify lab personnel.
2. If necessary, evacuate lab.
3. If necessary, use safety shower.
4. Notify building manager Stuart McNeil (5-2874) and the University Operations Center (5-5560).

OTHER RELEVANT COMMENTS:

No eating, drinking, or smoking.
