TYPE OF RESEARCH: Experimental Atomic Optics
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT MUST BE USED FOR ALL WORK:
- Safety Glasses - Safety goggles must be employed when working with
any process that could throw off debris that would break non-safety glass.
- Face Shields - N/A
- Rubber Boots - N/A
- Safety Goggles - When handling chemicals.
- Aprons - N/A
- Gloves - When working with cryogenics, use heavy denim gloves. For
other specific glove type vs. chemical, see http://www-safety.deas.harvard.edu
under "Safety Committee Services." If there is any question, see
Lenny Solomon.
- Steel-toed Shoes - Should be worn when moving heavy objects.
- Respirators - N/A
- Laser Safety Goggles - Laser goggles must be worn when lasers are
operating in the room.
- Other - N/A
GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING RULES:
- Keep walkway clear..
- Return all tools after use.
WASTE DISPOSAL RULES:
- Sharps: All razor blades AND PIPETTES must be disposed of in the labeled
red "biohazard" containers.
- Chemicals:
- Store hazardous waste in labeled containers in the Satellite accumulation
area, located in Jefferson 150b.
- Call 6-3322 for pickup when a container is full.
- If you are not a full-time worker in the lab, please notify the Safety
Officer of the waste streams you are using.
FUME HOOD USE: There is no fume hood in this location.
CHEMICAL STORAGE: There are three separate storage areas for chemicals:
- Squirt bottles must have secondary containment, such as the white spill
trays.
- Bulk chemicals must be stored in the chemical cabinets located in Jefferson
150a and 150b. (See SOP listing for Jefferson 150a)
SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIRED:
- Laser Safety
- Hazardous Waste
- Compressed Gas
CHEMICAL SPILL CLEANUP PROCEDURES:
- Small spills should be cleaned up by those in the lab. The location of our
spill kit is in Jefferson 150b, on the right side of the door when entering
the room.
- Oil spills:
- Clean up with Speedi-Dri, which is located in the Machine Shop, Jefferson
032.
- Put used Speedi-Dri into an appropriately tagged container.
- Put container in the Satellite Accumulation Area in Jefferson 150b.
- Call EH&S (6-3322) for a pickup.
- For larger spills, or those which may be hazardous to others in the lab:
- Notify lab personnel.
- If necessary, evacuate lab.
- If necessary, use safety shower.
- Notify building manager Stuart McNeil (5-2874) and the University Operations Center (5-5560).
OTHER RELEVANT COMMENTS:
- Fire Extinguisher locations:
- Type ABC: 3 located in Jefferson 150c (near doors to 150a, 150d, 150f),
and 1 located in Jefferson 150b (to the left of the sink).
- Type D: located in the NW corner of 150b.
- Safety Shower location: Jefferson 150a.
- Emergency Eyewash station: Jefferson 150b, sink area.
- No eating, drinking, or smoking.
