TYPE OF RESEARCH: Experimental Atomic Optics

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT MUST BE USED FOR ALL WORK:

GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING RULES:

  1. Keep entryway clear of clutter.
  2. Keep access to safety shower clear.

WASTE DISPOSAL RULES:

  1. Store hazardous waste in labeled containers in the Satellite accumulation area.
  2. Call 6-3322 for pickup when a container is full.

FUME HOOD USE:

There is no fume hood in this location.

CHEMICAL STORAGE: There are three separate storage areas for chemicals:

  1. Acids are stored in the marked cabinet under the fume hood in Jefferson 150b.
  2. Bases and solvents are stored in the marked yellow cabinet in Jefferson 150b.
  3. Dry chemicals (such as alkali metals) are stored in the yellow cabinet in Jefferson 150a.

SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIRED:

  1. If handling chemicals, one must be trained in:

CHEMICAL SPILL CLEANUP PROCEDURES:

  1. Small spills should be cleaned up by those in the lab. The location of our spill kit is in Jefferson 150b, on the right side of the door when entering the room.
  2. For larger spills, or those which may be hazardous to others in the lab:

  1. Fire Extinguisher locations:
  2. Safety Shower location: Jefferson 150a.
  3. Emergency Eyewash station: Jefferson 150b, sink area.
