TYPE OF RESEARCH: Experimental Atomic Optics

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT MUST BE USED FOR ALL WORK:

• Safety Glasses - Must be employed when working with any process that could throw off debris that would break non-safety glass.
• Face Shields - Handling reactive metals (such as Cesium, Rubidium, or Sodium) requires wearing an apron and face shield.
• Rubber Boots - N/A
• Safety Goggles - Must be worn when handling chemicals. Note that goggles alone are insufficient if splashing of chemicals could occur--in such a case, also wear a face shield.
• Aprons - Handling reactive metals (such as Cesium, Rubidium, or Sodium) requires wearing an apron and face shield.
• Gloves - When working with chemicals or other materials that warrant the use of protective gloves (such as work with cryogens), proper glove selection is critical. For other specific glove type vs. chemical, see http://www-safety.deas.harvard.edu under "Safety Committee Services." If there is any question, see Lenny Solomon.
• Steel-toed Shoes - Should be worn when moving heavy objects.
• Respirators - N/A
• Laser Safety Goggles - N/A

GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING RULES:

1. Keep entryway clear of clutter.
2. Keep access to safety shower clear.

WASTE DISPOSAL RULES:

1. Store hazardous waste in labeled containers in the Satellite accumulation area.
2. Call 6-3322 for pickup when a container is full.

FUME HOOD USE:

There is no fume hood in this location.

CHEMICAL STORAGE: There are three separate storage areas for chemicals:

1. Acids are stored in the marked cabinet under the fume hood in Jefferson 150b.
2. Bases and solvents are stored in the marked yellow cabinet in Jefferson 150b.
3. Dry chemicals (such as alkali metals) are stored in the yellow cabinet in Jefferson 150a.

SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIRED:

1. If handling chemicals, one must be trained in:
• Chemical Safety
• Hazardous Waste
2. If moving or handling the compressed gas in this area, one must be trained in:
   • Compressed Gas

CHEMICAL SPILL CLEANUP PROCEDURES:

1. Small spills should be cleaned up by those in the lab. The location of our spill kit is in Jefferson 150b, on the right side of the door when entering the room.
2. For larger spills, or those which may be hazardous to others in the lab:
   • Notify lab personnel.
   • If necessary, evacuate lab.
   • If necessary, use safety shower.
   • Notify building manager Stuart McNeil (5-2874) and the University Operations Center (5-5560).
     

OTHER RELEVANT COMMENTS:

1. Fire Extinguisher locations:
   • Type ABC: 3 located in Jefferson 150c (near doors to 150a, 150d, 150f), and 1 located in Jefferson 150b (to the left of the sink).
• Type D: located in the NW corner of 150b.
2. Safety Shower location: Jefferson 150a.
3. Emergency Eyewash station: Jefferson 150b, sink area.
   
4. No eating, drinking, or smoking.
