TYPE OF RESEARCH: Atmospheric Chemistry
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT MUST BE USED FOR ALL WORK:
- Safety Glasses - To be worn when working in the lab at all times.
- Face Shields - N/A
- Rubber Boots - N/A
- Safety Goggles - To be worn when working with hazardous chemicals.
- Aprons - N/A
- Gloves - (Please specify type) Appropriate ones to be used
when working with hazardous chemicals. When working with chemicals or other
materials that warrant the use of protective gloves (such as work with cryogens),
proper glove selection is critical. At the Safety Committee web site (http://www-safety.deas.harvard.edu)
under "Safety Committee Services" can be found a listing of glove
type vs. chemical. If there is any question, see Lenny Solomon.

GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING RULES:
- Return chemicals to storage area after use.
- Place tools in their respective areas after use.
WASTE DISPOSAL RULES:
- Place hazardous materials in labeled containers in the Satellite Accumulation
Area.
- Dispose of glass and metal objects in appropriate container in the Satellite
Accumulation Area.
- The Satellite Accumulation Area is located near the south side exit of the
lab, across from Arlene Pippin's Office.
FUME HOOD USE:
Use fume hood when working with hazardous material or with processes involving
fume emissions.
CHEMICAL STORAGE:
- Store chemicals in appropriate area, i.e., shelves.
- Flammable solvents are to be stored in the flammable liquids cabinet.
- Acids are stored under the sink in secondary containers that will catch
any spills.
- Dry chemicals are stored in the glass-front cabinet.
SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIRED:
All laboratory personnel are required to take the hazardous waste disposal
(offered by EH&S) and Right-To-Know training.
CHEMICAL SPILL CLEAN-UP PROCEDURES:
- In case of minor or harmless spill, lab personnel may clean up the spill.
- In case of a dangerous chemical spill, notify other lab occupants. Use Eyewash
station and/or shower if necessary.
- For large spills, clear the area of personnel and call the University Operations Center (5-5560).
OTHER RELEVANT COMMENTS:
- Always make sure the compressed gas cylinders are securely fastened in their
place.
- Do not block access to exits, eye wash stations, shower, and First Aid kit.
- Everyone should visit the safety committee website at http://www-safety.deas.harvard.edu
and familiarize themselves with the contents.
