TYPE OF RESEARCH: Support Lab with general machine shop equipment
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT MUST BE USED FOR ALL WORK:
- Safety Glasses - Must be worn when in the shop.
- Face Shields - Must be worn as needed when using hand grinders.
- Rubber Boots - N/A
- Safety Goggles - Must be worn when operating certain machines.
- Aprons - N/A
- Gloves - (Please specify type) Gloves are supplied as needed
for process. Not to be worn during machining. When working with chemicals
or other materials that warrant the use of protective gloves (such as work
with cryogens), proper glove selection is critical. At the Safety Committee
web site (http://www-safety.deas.harvard.edu)
under "Safety Committee Services" can be found a listing of glove
type vs. chemical. If there is any question, see Lenny Solomon.
- Steel-toed Shoes - Must be worn while in shop.
- Respirators - Are available for use on certain applications (epoxys,
glues).

GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING RULES:
- All machines must be blown off after use.
- All tools must be returned to proper cabinets.
- Speedi-dri is available for spills of cutting oils.
WASTE DISPOSAL RULES:
Oil soaked rags are to be placed in proper containers.
FUME HOOD USE:
The fume hood must be used when welding in the shop area and when using chemicals.
CHEMICAL STORAGE:
Flammable chemicals are to be stored in flammable cabinets on the C.E.A.
floor.
SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIRED:
Training in the use of respirators is required by OSHA Standards and is available
through EH&S (http://www.uos.harvard.edu/ehs/).
CHEMICAL SPILL CLEAN-UP PROCEDURES:
- Spill kits are supplied in certain areas of the shop.
- For large spills, clear the area of personnel and call the University Operations Center (5-5560).
OTHER RELEVANT COMMENTS:
No unauthorized personnel are allowed to use equipment in the machine shop.
Must have permission before using any equipment.
