LOCAL FIRE MARSHALS

All Safety Officers (that's everyone on the Safety Committee) are Fire Marshals. In this, your responsibilities are as follows:

  1. Keep an accurate, up-to-date list of the members of your group in your area.
  2. Once a year, go over emergency evacuation procedures with your group members. If there are pieces of equipment that should be turned off for an orderly shutdown in the event the electricity is turned off in the building, please have those people clearly identified. Make certain that they know it is their responsibility.
  3. Post the floor plans to your floor and building with the evacuation routes at appropriate locations. Ideal locations are near stairwells and on the safety bulletin board. Floor plans are located on the web site.
  4. Make certain that your group members know that they have to assemble outside the building for a head count check after the building has been evacuated. Ask all of your people to assemble at least 100 feet away from the building. Use you list to make certain all are accounted for. This is very important. Be aware of any visitors to your group as they might not be familiar of the location of the emergency exits.
  5. If you have any disabled personnel who would not be able to evacuative quickly down a staircase, plans must be made in advance for an emergency scenario. If you have any questions, please contact
    solomon@huarp.harvard.edu
  6. Before you evacuate your space, if it does not put you in jeopardy, quickly walk through your local area to check to see that everyone has left the building. Close all doors when you exit.
  7. A great time to practice these procedures is during our annual fire drills.

REMEMBER - Be cool headed and calm in an emergency.
